The application test of LED road lights for the experiment cities are carried out by stages. In the first stage, it is to test the feasibility of application effects and investment return. In the second stage, it is to extend the test period, improve technology, set up standards, and further improve the performance and cost of the products as well as the application methods. In the third stage, it is to introduce the social capital investment to promote LED lighting products in the society. There are five stages in some cities for LED lighting products promotion. The preliminary estimation shows that all the work can be complete by year 2020.
The core for economic return of LED road construction is the actual lighting efficiency and cost improvement. The checking mode and light layout design of lamps have much too do with the design of road lights configuration as well as the contrast samples. In order to compare with the high pressure sodium lamps and different LED road lights of different configurations, a new test scenario for FTE lighting efficiency was raised. The advantage of this plan is that it will lead the designers to focus on the improvement of the second optical design, which can make full use of the potential of LED road system instead of only caring about the lumen of the lamps. (The figure shows ETF calculation.) The electricity saving efficiency for the experiment cities is from 20% to 60%, which owns to the light distribution of the lamps.
